The LED Matrix


An LED matrix is another way of display measurement; it is a dot matrix of large display and low resolution. Both industry and commercial use the matrix while buying an LED screen. It contains a 2-D diode matrix that has anode joined in columns and cathode in rows.

The LED matrix allows individual control of the rows and column by controlling the electricity that goes through each pair of the diodes. The matrix is popular because they offer the ability to display information, animated images, static content and text.


How to Calculate Matrix

To calculate the matrix, you will need to know the number of pixels on each LED display tile. Then multiply this number across the entire display. We already know that in a matrix, the LEDs are placed in rows and columns, which is analogous to X and Y coordinates. For instance, you have a 30 x 30 matrix of A2’ x 2’ display. So, to calculate the matrix, you will have to multiple 30 pixels per foot to 2. T


Total Pixels = 30 X 2 = 60 pixels.


Since both X and Y have the same value, thus, it will be 60 x 60 pixels. You might think it to be simple math, however, it does not always generate accurate results. Reason being, different manufacturers use different configurations in comparison to their counterparts.

We agree that the difference is unnoticeable, yet the consumers need to know that every LED display is according to the specific set of rules.

The universal module size is the best way to know about the most exact viewable space determination while comparing different LED screens with same matrices but different resolutions. You do not have to focus on the actual cabinet or screen size as it has not much to do with the crisp resolution. For instance, you can take a 10-mm display and a 30-mm display, with the same matrix 96 x 144. Now the 10mm display will achieve better resolution because of its smaller size, in comparison to a 20mm screen with more space.


Types of LED Matrix


There are many different types of LED matric, and below we have come up with the most commonly used ones.


  • 128*68 Eight Lined
  • 128*32 Four Lined
  • 128*16 Two Lined
  • 5*7 dot Matrix
  • 8*8 dot Matrix

8* Dot Matix


In this matrix, the multiple diodes are connected together in rows and columns. Doing this will reduce the number of pins that we need in order to drive the diodes. There will be about 64 I/O pins for displaying every diode pixel.

To reduce the I/O pins to 16, in an 8*8 dot matrix, connect all the anodes in rows and connect all the cathodes in columns. This will generate the same results, but it will have less Input, output pins.


5*7 dot matrix


There are 5 rows and 7 columns in a 5*7 LED matrix. These are connected together to generate images and videos.


The Viewable Area

Last, we have the correction angle. This is not a common angle and many do not use it. It basically compensates for any obstacle that might come between the user and the digital signage. There are no hard and fast rules, but small things help you find the right viewable area. For instance, a person with 20/20 eyesight can clearly see a sign from about 7-8 meters of distance. They are able to read a slightly taller text easily. Since it takes a shopper to reach your shop about 5-7 seconds, you have to make the text readable in that time.


The amount of Time Changes


When you put your sign about 20 feet and directly in front of you at your eye level, you will be able to see the sign by the time our approach. This holds true if you have perfect eyesight. A litter up or below the perfect angle will make it difficult for the audience to see, however, it is not possible to adjust the LED screen according to individual customers.
