DIP stands for Dual Inline Package. The technology uses the idea of separate LED bulbs. Every LED bulb is a DIP display is clearly visible. Despite the angle, you are looking from, you can easily see a red LED, a blue LED and a green LED.

Two connector feet join the bubble-shaped colored LED bulbs. Every DIP module comes with three of these bubble shaped color LED bulbs and for mounting the DIP modules, the display sockets. In some cases, also use through-hole soldering to mount the modules.

Unlike the DIP technology, where we can clearly see three different LED bulbs, in SMD all three colors of the LED bulbs are put together into one slim case. This slim case is directly soldered onto the circuit board.

All the three LEDs, blue, green and red, are visually put together into a single point. They can produce either white color or black color. The size of the LED module is either a square or a circle and it cannot have a diameter greater than a few millimeters.

The minimum size of the module is about 1mm. However, technological advancement might lead to a module diameter of less than 1 mm.

It is not possible to, directly view the LED in a small module. The advanced SMD display use about 1.6-millimeter distance between each point.

The reason, the modules are able to sit so closely together is that the manufacturers mount all the diode onto only a single surface on the board.

Since SMD outdoor LED signs come with the closer placement of diodes, it means they have higher resolution and thus they are the best option for indoor LED displays.

This might not be the case with an outdoor LED display, where you simply do not need extremely high resolution due to the optimal viewing distance.

Yes, manufacturers are working on producing high definition SMD outdoor LED display, but the focus remains on the indoor LED display.

 

Why DIP Technology has a Longer Shelf Lifespan

 

DIP technology has been around for many years and the time has allowed the manufacturers to master it. Yes, we do agree SMD is making its mark, but the new technology has a long battle to fight.

DIP displays have the ability to meet 8000 nits or more. This is perfect especially when you plan to install the screen directly under the sun. SMD outdoor LED signs, on the contrary, can meet only 6500 or less. Thus, people prefer it for indoor.

DIP displays have a higher IP rating, which ensures that they are able to withstand extreme weather condition. Most DIP outdoor LED display comes with IP 65 or above.

 

Factors that affect the Lifespan of both DIP and SMD LED Display

 

Now that we have an idea of how DIP outdoor LED display has a longer shelf life. It is time to know the factors that affect the screen’s lifespan.

100,000 Hours of Lifespan: True or Myth

You might have come across the website or a retail shop claiming that their LED display has a 100,000 h lifespan. However, we can assure you that it is not true.

Instead of believing us, why don’t you calculate it yourself and you would know. A 100,000 h lifespan means that even if an LED works around the clock for 356 days a year, it would last for more than 11 years.

This is a bit of exaggerated data. If you ask us, we believe that a LED display would last for about 6-8 years. In case of a DIP display, you might have to replace some parts and the display will last longer.

Replacing parts might not work on the case of other displays. Nonetheless, and LED display that can last for more than 10 years means it is of extremely high quality.

Mostly, indoor LED displays tend to last more than 10 years, as they do not have to withstand different weather conditions.

In the case of outdoor LED screen, the weather does affect the lifespan of an LED screen.

After ensuring that you have all the right products for the LED display, you need to make sure that the production process is properly controlled.

Pay close heed to good anti-static methods including wearing anti-static clothes, anti-static ring, a proper production line and choosing a cleanroom.

All the above factors would minimize the failure rate of an LED screen. To ensure that the screen components are not damaged while transporting, ensure proper and complete packing of the product. We do agree that LED bulbs are not as susceptible to degree changes as the traditional incandescent models; however, LED bulbs are prone to damage. For a bulb to last longer, it should have a moderate temperature that ranges from about 50-80 degrees.

Extreme cold or hot will affect the bulb’s illuminating ability. In the worst case, it will destroy the bulb. For an outdoor display, the weather is always a challenge. In the extreme cold, the bulb takes time to warm up. Whereas in the sweltering heat, the bulb might shut down to cool down.

So, if you leave your light to the mercy of such a volatile environment you are simply reducing its lifespan. If a bulb usually lasts for 6 years, in these extreme conditions it will last for just 3-4 years.
