Both indoor as well as outdoor LED displays are currently among the most powerful tool of advertisement. The success of LED screens results in the industries technological advancement. Today, we have different types of LEDs including OLED, DIP or SMD.
Every technology has its merits and demerits. The decision mainly depends on your business requirements. However, one technology is better in a certain environment in comparison to the others.
In this article, we will be discussing why a DIP outdoor LED display last longer instead of an SMD outdoor LED singage.
NOTE: By no means, we are saying that DIP is better than SMD. Both technologies are unmatched in their respective environment.
It is important to understand how these technologies are different before we talk about the reason for DIP displays a longer life and the factors that have an adverse effect on the life of an LED display.
DIP stands for Dual Inline Package. The technology uses the idea of separate LED bulbs. Every LED bulb is a DIP display is clearly visible. Despite the angle, you are looking from, you can easily see a red LED, a blue LED and a green LED.
Two connector feet join the bubble-shaped colored LED bulbs. Every DIP module comes with three of these bubble shaped color LED bulbs and for mounting the DIP modules, the display sockets. In some cases, also use through-hole soldering to mount the modules.
However, most manufacturers prefer sockets instead of soldering as replacing sockets is easier and there is no risk of the screen being damaged due to overheating. In the case of soldering, numerous screens have suffered due to an overheating issue.
To improve the screens reliability factors and their ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, the manufacturers use heat-dissipating silicone to make the display weather resistant. Remember, makers do the weatherproofing after assembling the DIP outdoor LED display.
In addition, the DIP technology comes with a non-homogenous contrast feature. If you wondering, what it means? It means the DIP outdoor LED modules are able to relax and they are able to reflect external light.
However, this is not the case with flat SMD outdoor LED signs modules. To further enhance the picture quality and improve the overall impact of the DIP display, the displays propose a virtual pitch technology.
A virtual pitch technology allows the DIP displays to add a fourth white LED in order to enhance the visibility of the screen and emphasize its definition.
To ensure high visibility, a DIP LED display ideally produces about four Lumens per LED i.e. it is making one square pixel from 4 lights. Due to this high rate of lumens per LED, the display offers outstanding picture quality with a high visibility level.
The high visibility factor is what makes a DIP technology robust and a better option for outdoor LED displays.
Unlike the DIP technology, where we can clearly see three different LED bulbs, in SMD all three colors of the LED bulbs are put together into one slim case. This slim case is directly soldered onto the circuit board.
All the three LEDs, blue, green and red, are visually put together into a single point. They can produce either white color or black color. The size of the LED module is either a square or a circle and it cannot have a diameter greater than a few millimeters.
The minimum size of the module is about 1mm. However, technological advancement might lead to a module diameter of less than 1 mm.
It is not possible to, directly view the LED in a small module. The advanced SMD display use about 1.6-millimeter distance between each point.
The reason, the modules are able to sit so closely together is that the manufacturers mount all the diode onto only a single surface on the board.
Since SMD outdoor LED signs come with the closer placement of diodes, it means they have higher resolution and thus they are the best option for indoor LED displays.
This might not be the case with an outdoor LED display, where you simply do not need extremely high resolution due to the optimal viewing distance.
Yes, manufacturers are working on producing high definition SMD outdoor LED display, but the focus remains on the indoor LED display.
DIP technology has been around for many years and the time has allowed the manufacturers to master it. Yes, we do agree SMD is making its mark, but the new technology has a long battle to fight.
The quality control in the factory makes a major difference. The lifespan of a LED greatly depends on the quality control feature especially in the case of the SMD display.
Since SMD technology is newer and smaller, thus machines decade old cannot handle it properly. The improper installation of the screen leads to a shorter lifespan.
In addition, replacing different modules of a DIP outdoor LED screen is fairly easy as they do not sit closely together. Therefore, if a module is damaged, you can replace it with another and increase the overall life of the screen.
However, in SMD outdoor LED signs, the modules are mounted on a single surface and they are close-knit. Thus, changing a single module can be a tricky task. There is a probability of damaging other modules resulting in an adverse effect on the shelf life of the display.
DIP displays have the ability to meet 8000 nits or more. This is perfect especially when you plan to install the screen directly under the sun. SMD outdoor LED signs, on the contrary, can meet only 6500 or less. Thus, people prefer it for indoor.
DIP displays have a higher IP rating, which ensures that they are able to withstand extreme weather condition. Most DIP outdoor LED display comes with IP 65 or above.
Now that we have an idea of how DIP outdoor LED display has a longer shelf life. It is time to know the factors that affect the screen’s lifespan.
You might have come across the website or a retail shop claiming that their LED display has a 100,000 h lifespan. However, we can assure you that it is not true.
Instead of believing us, why don’t you calculate it yourself and you would know. A 100,000 h lifespan means that even if an LED works around the clock for 356 days a year, it would last for more than 11 years.
This is a bit of exaggerated data. If you ask us, we believe that a LED display would last for about 6-8 years. In case of a DIP display, you might have to replace some parts and the display will last longer.
Replacing parts might not work on the case of other displays. Nonetheless, and LED display that can last for more than 10 years means it is of extremely high quality.
Mostly, indoor LED displays tend to last more than 10 years, as they do not have to withstand different weather conditions.
In the case of outdoor LED screen, the weather does affect the lifespan of an LED screen.
We did mention above that, the production quality of an LED display would have a direct impact on its shelf life. Since people have mastered the DIP production procedure, thus it has a longer shelf life.
The production procedure does not include only the assembling process, on the contrary, it starts from the purchase of raw material. You need to make sure that the electronic components including LED beads, switching power supply, IC brand is of the highest quality in order to increase the life span of the screen.
After ensuring that you have all the right products for the LED display, you need to make sure that the production process is properly controlled.
Pay close heed to good anti-static methods including wearing anti-static clothes, anti-static ring, a proper production line and choosing a cleanroom.
All the above factors would minimize the failure rate of an LED screen. To ensure that the screen components are not damaged while transporting, ensure proper and complete packing of the product. Do not let go of anything as it might dismantle some part and reduce the screen lifespan or worse cause serious damage.
Since the objective is to install the screen outdoor, it is important to take the necessary safety precautions. First, doing a lighting surge measure is imperative, as it will allow you to shut down the LED screen in the lighting storm weather.
A working LED screen in this particular weather is more prone to damage in comparison to the regular days. You need to pay close attention to the environmental protection factor as well. DIP technology comes with inbuilt heat-dissipating silicone that allows it to withstand bad weather.
To add more protection, use an external cabinet as this would ensure that no water seeps into the interior of the screen. You would have the option of either buying a screen that comes with a cabinet or getting a cabinet separately.
The heat-dissipating silicone ensures that the DIP displays do not get overheated. However, we do recommend that you choose the right cooling equipment to, further eliminate the threat.
Routine maintenance of the screen is must in order to improve the lifespan of both DIP and SMD outdoor LED signs. Regular cleaning of the accumulated dust will ensure that the cooling system works properly, thus the screen will last longer.
We do agree that LED bulbs are not as susceptible to degree changes as the traditional incandescent models; however, LED bulbs are prone to damage. For a bulb to last longer, it should have a moderate temperature that ranges from about 50-80 degrees.
Extreme cold or hot will affect the bulb’s illuminating ability. In the worst case, it will destroy the bulb. For an outdoor display, the weather is always a challenge. In the extreme cold, the bulb takes time to warm up. Whereas in the sweltering heat, the bulb might shut down to cool down.
So, if you leave your light to the mercy of such a volatile environment you are simply reducing its lifespan. If a bulb usually lasts for 6 years, in these extreme conditions it will last for just 3-4 years.
Nonetheless, if you take all the precautionary measure, you can increase the overall life of your LED display.
DIP technology is around for 50 years, people are familiar with its every aspect. They know every trick in the book to increase the lifespan of a DIP outdoor LED display.
On the other hand, SMD is a new technology and it is still requires time to grow and expand. Since DIP technology is more robust and the manufacturers are able to maintain the highest standard while producing DIP display, thus it has a longer lifespan.
A DIP outdoor display can last for about 5-7 years, in comparison to the SMD outdoor LED signs that can live for about 3-5 years. Replacing the part of DIP display is easier as well, thus that ads additional year to its life.
DIP outdoor displays come with heat-dissipating silicone coating, which ensures that the displays are able to withstand, extreme weather conditions. In addition, most DIP displays have an IP rating of 65 or above.
Most of our customers are a fan of DIP outdoor LED display. However, if you think otherwise, we would love to know your point of view as well.
