Outdoor LED signage is becoming a massive platform to effectively promote brand awareness and enhance brand images. The demand for LED screen has led to technological advancements.
We no longer are limited to the traditional DIP LED screens, on the contrary, we have options like SMD, COD or OLED.
Despite having different variations of LED display, the race is between DIP and SMD. Both these technologies offer different benefits along with some disadvantages.
Since LED displays are effective, more than 65 percent of the people visit a retail shop because they saw the ad on the digital screen. Thus, it is imperative to make the right choice.
The type of technology you use greatly depends on your business requirements. People who are looking for an outdoor LED screen generally opt for DIP display.
In case, if you want an indoor display, you can choose SMD technology. This by no way means that they are not reversible. You can use SMD display for outdoor and DIP for indoor screens.
Just to ensure that you make the right decision, we will shed light on both technologies and highlight their differences.
DIP LED screens have been around for years now. The robust and strong technology has become a favorite among the marketing industries.
Both DIP and SMD give the same visual appearance, however, you can make out the difference after you turn them off. DIP stands for Dual Inline Package. DIP displays have separated LEDs. You can see each LED individually.
There is a red LED, a green LED and a blue LED dot for every point on the screen that you see. DIP LEDs sometimes give a non-homogenous contrast. They reflect the external life. Due to the non-homogenous feature, the LEDs are in relief.
Lastly, DIP technology comes with an advanced feature, the virtual pitch. It means that DIP screens have the ability to generate a fourth LED, WHITE for the rendering of the screen and for accentuating definition.
Most people prefer to use DIP technology for outdoor LED displays. Reason being, the screen does not go below pitch 7.
In addition, DIP Outdoor LED signage is globally more robust in time. So, when it comes to outdoor LED sign, DIP technology is the winner.
SMD technology has the opposite concept. Instead of using three different LEDs, it groups all three of them into a single point of either black or white color.
The three LEDs include red, blue and green. The point generated by these three LEDs is either a square or a dot. The diameter of the dot is not more than a few millimeters.
Since the LEDs are not visible individually, thus there is a very little gap between each pixel.
An SMD technology offers unmatched screen resolution. In today's world, you might come across a screen with a pixel pitch as less as 1.6 millimeters.
Over the years, DIP LED screen technology has matured, something that SMD technology is struggling to do. Since about 70 percent of the people see and LED and more than half-remember the advertisement. Therefore, you need to make a strong digital appearance.
DIP LED displays offer color consistency. They are able to generate high-quality images even in extreme weather condition. DIP LED displays to come with waterproof feature.
Their pixel sharing technology or better known as the virtual pixel technology ensures that they deliver outstanding quality content and improve viewers’ experience.
Since DIP displays are mostly used for outdoor, therefore, they incorporate a high-level waterproof functionality. In addition to the waterproof features, the displays are immune to sunlight due to their UV protection feature and moisture because of their moisture-proof ability.
As we said, that DIP technology has matured, therefore, the manufacturer’s excel is making only the best DIP screens. DIP LED screens are extremely energy-efficient. Despite offering more brightness in comparison to other LED screens, they run low on energy.
A DIP LED displays can offer about 8000 nits or more of brightness. So, even if you place the screen directly under the sun, it will still be clearly visible.
In addition, the years of background ensures that DIP LED signage is reliable. You can use it for many years, and it will generate the same picture quality. The stability factor of DIP is perhaps the most important thing that gives it an edge over SMD technology.
Disadvantages of Outdoor LED signage
Of course, DIP is after all a technology and it has its disadvantages as well. To choose the right Outdoor LED signage for your business, you need to know the negative side of the technology as well.
Below we have listed the disadvantages of a DIP LED displays.
To start with, DIP LED screens do offer high brightness level, but they have a poor pixel mixing effect. We think the reason behind this is separate LEDs lights.
The viewing angle is another issue with the DIP screens. The maximum viewing angle a DIP screen can offer in the horizontal direction is about 110 degree. In today’s competitive world, this can be troublesome.
Since DIP offers stability, thus its manufacturing demands time. The entire production process of these screens is complicated and it requires time and energy. Of course, when you have to input more time and energy, it will have a direct impact on the cost.
Again, the technology is reliable because it has a strong production process. For a DIP screen, the manufacturers need to have a higher antistatic level.
It is difficult to achieve an actual pixel resolution. If you try to achieve more than 10,000 pixels per square meter, things can get complicated.
DIP pixel pitch cannot make it over 20mm, 16mm, and 10mm, etc. Since there are three LEDs in every pixel and the size is DIP246, thus it means you cannot install a DIP LED screen for a viewing distance of 8 meters.
Despite having a difficult manufacturing process, DIP LEDs are very heavy. Lifting them or changing their place can be troublesome.
The reason behind the thickness and heaviness of the screen is the individually attached bulbs. The screen resolution is low especially due to the four-bulb pixel composition.
The fourth-bulb composition leads to a slight pink hue especially in the lower-quality screen because the additional bulb is of red color.
Stability and reliability come with a price. We do agree that DIP technology is reliable, but it is also expensive. You will have to pay an additional cost in order to have a stable technology.
Next, in line, we have the merits and demerits of SMD technology. Having a clear idea of what you are getting yourself will help you take a better decision.
Lets’ focus on the positive features of the technology first.
SMD technology offers good color consistency. Something, we did miss in the DIP screens. A good color consistency ensures a resolution screen and a better picture quality.
Likewise, the screen has a good mixing color feature mainly because the lights are not individual LEDs as was the case in DIP screen. On the contrary, the lights are grouped together, thus can offer seamless blending.
SMD Outdoor LED signage does come with an outstanding viewing angle. If you compare its viewing angle with several other light sources, you will realize that it offers the best angle.
The Lightweight of the screen is another advantage. Since it is not bulky or heavy, thus lifting it from one place to another is easier.
Due to easy installation and easy moving process, people prefer having SMD displays especially when they do not want something fixed.
The viewing angle of the screen is excellent. In comparison to DIP’s 110-degree viewing angle in the horizontal direction, the SMD display offers a 120-degree viewing angle in the same direction. The difference of 10 degree does make a great difference and thus a better impact.
The production process of SMD Outdoor LED signage is easier as well. Automatic machines conduct most of the production process. Automatic machines save labor cost and they can produce a large number of displays without incurring additional labor cost.
Like DIP screens, SMD screens also come with some negative points.
SMD displays require a high antistatic level. Higher the level, greater the complications!
The entire process is very difficult. The difficulty level is something that really turns the manufacturers off. In addition, the process cost is also very high.
SMD screens do offer high resolution and great picture quality, but at the same time, they do not run low on energy. The cost of great picture quality means a big spike in your energy bills.
Despite consuming more energy, the screens are not able to match the brightness level of a DIP screen. This is upsetting especially when you are planning to invest in SMD Outdoor LED signage.
Stability is a big problem for SMD screen. DIP having years of experience, does offer more reliability. SMD screens especially the larger size outdoor screens do have issues.
Yes, the manufacturers are working on them; however, it will take some time. After introducing the SMD5050 LED lamp into the market, the manufacturers faced several issues. The lamps did not work after the final installation.
Even now, the modern SMD screens including SMD2525, SMD2727, SMD2828, SMD3535 and SMD1921 did have issues initially, but with time, the market approved them. It seems now they are acceptable.
SMD does not have a longer shelf life, the manufacturers’ are working on this aspect of the screen, but we believe it will take some time. The life of an SMD screen is between 3 to 5 years, which is less in comparison to DIP long life.
Besides having a small shelf life, SMD screens also have a low brightness level. The maximum nits they can meet are 6500. So, if you plan to place the screen directly under the sun, we would vote against it.
Choosing a DIP Outdoor LED signage or an SMD screen greatly depends on your business needs. A general rule of thumb is to use DIP screens for outdoor displays and SMD screens for indoor display.
However, things are changing, SMD technology is improving every day. Modern SMD chips feature high lumen output, better heat dispersion and low optical decay. So, we believe that in the future people would prefer SMD over DIP.
The Lightweight SMD screen with wider visual angle and better output quality are still struggling only because of their low shelf life and reliability issue. Of course, things will change, but until then DIP technology is there to make up to what SMD is missing.
Enjoy reliability and stability with DIP LED screen. In addition, you can save big on your energy bills, as DIP does not consume a lot of energy.
Nonetheless, both these screens have a dark sky compliant, they are both IP43 rated and offer RGB configuration that allows them to display about 281 trillion colors.
SMD might be the new cool thing in, but it is going to take a long time before it can drive DIP Outdoor LED signage out of the market. If you have a viewing distance of more than 10 meters, a DIP screen would do. However, for lesser viewing distance, try using SMD displays.
