LED digital display essentials: Pixel Pitch, Matrix and Viewable Area

Every industry has a set of standards that the manufacturer has to follow. Despite producing different models, the manufacturer has to meet certain standards. For example, the mobile manufacturer would have a set of norms that he would have to follow in order to produce a phone set. Now, it may be Apple or Samsung, they might be producing different models, but they will still follow some defined rules. However, this is not the case with LED digital display. Therefore, you fully understand the LED digital display essentials.

You must be wondering what those essentials are and why do you need to know about them. Despite the LED industry growing exponentially every day, there are no set rules for manufacturers. Every manufacturer can set his own size and pixel count. This can be really troublesome because it makes it harder for you to compare and purchase LED display screens. Being a purchaser, you would want to compare LED digital display essentials before making a purchase, so what are you to do?

Although it is never going to be apple to apple, you will have to look deeper. Instead of just comparing the cabinet size, you will have to learn about pixel pitch, viewable area, and matrix. All these features will help you find the best digital signage.

Pixel Pitch

The pixel pitch of an LED screen holds great importance; after all, it has a direct impact on the quality of the LED’s image. In easier words, we can say that a pixel pitch of an LED screen is the distance from the center of the one-pixel cluster to the center of its adjacent pixel cluster.

If the pixel pitch is smaller, you will see less empty space between each pitch. This will result in crisp images and better quality videos. A rule of thumb for pixel pitch is the smaller the pixel pitch the finer the image. Likewise, the greater the pixel pitch, the less find the image quality.

So, smaller Pixel Pitch is better?

If a smaller pixel image produces better image quality, it means that it is better in comparison to the larger pixel pitch. The answer to this question greatly depends on your requirements for an LED screen. If you are planning to install the screen at a place where the audience will be near it, then you should opt for a smaller pixel pitch screen.

However, in case your objective is to install the LED digital sign far, far away from the audience, then using a smaller pixel pitch screen is the wrong decision. Remember, a smaller pixel pitch increases the cost of the LED screen.

The reason that a smaller pixel increases the cost of an LED screen is that greater numbers of LED clusters are placed on the black plate of the circuit board. In an LED world, one pixel means one LED, thus the higher number of pixels, the greater number of LEDs that you will have to buy.

To successful create LED video walls; you will have to put together multiple modules on a display surface. The industry calls these modules tiles as well. Since you can place as many tiles as you like, thus you can create any size or shape you want.

Pixel Pitch and LED Price

The number of LEDs in digital signage has a direct impact on its price. The more LEDs you install, the higher the price will get. LEDs or modules contribute to the majority of LED display price. Therefore, when you opt for a finer pixel pitch, be ready to pay a hefty price.

The trick here is to find the optimal distance of an LED screen in order to find the right pixel and reduce cost. For example, if you are planning to install an interactive display inside a mall, you will have to use a smaller pixel pitch. As the audience is going to be very near the display, thus they would want a crisp in the smooth image.

In case, you plan to put up a digital LED billboard, you really do not need a smaller pixel pitch. Since the optimal viewing distance will be large, you can use a higher pixel pitch because the audience will not be able to see the empty space between pixels. For them, the billboard will appear to have a high quality image generation. However, when someone moves up close he or she will be able to see pixilation.

The LED Matrix

An LED matrix is another way of display measurement; it is a dot matrix of large display and low resolution. Both industry and commercial use the matrix while buying an LED screen. It contains a 2-D diode matrix that has anode joined in columns and cathode in rows.

The LED matrix allows individual control of the rows and column by controlling the electricity that goes through each pair of the diodes. The matrix is popular because they offer the ability to display information, animated images, static content and text.

How to Calculate Matrix

To calculate the matrix, you will need to know the number of pixels on each LED display tile. Then multiply this number across the entire display. We already know that in a matrix, the LEDs are placed in rows and columns, which is analogous to X and Y coordinates. For instance, you have a 30 x 30 matrix of A2’ x 2’ display. So, to calculate the matrix, you will have to multiple 30 pixels per foot to 2. T

Total Pixels = 30 X 2 = 60 pixels.

Since both X and Y have the same value, thus, it will be 60 x 60 pixels. You might think it to be simple math, however, it does not always generate accurate results. Reason being, different manufacturers use different configurations in comparison to their counterparts.

We agree that the difference is unnoticeable, yet the consumers need to know that every LED display is according to the specific set of rules.

The universal module size is the best way to know about the most exact viewable space determination while comparing different LED screens with same matrices but different resolutions. You do not have to focus on the actual cabinet or screen size as it has not much to do with the crisp resolution. For instance, you can take a 10-mm display and a 30-mm display, with the same matrix 96 x 144. Now the 10mm display will achieve better resolution because of its smaller size, in comparison to a 20mm screen with more space.

Types of LED Matrix

There are many different types of LED matric, and below we have come up with the most commonly used ones.

  • 128*68 Eight Lined
  • 128*32 Four Lined
  • 128*16 Two Lined
  • 5*7 dot Matrix
  • 8*8 dot Matrix

Below we have explained two matrixes so that you get an idea.

8* Dot Matix

In this matrix, the multiple diodes are connected together in rows and columns. Doing this will reduce the number of pins that we need in order to drive the diodes. There will be about 64 I/O pins for displaying every diode pixel.

To reduce the I/O pins to 16, in an 8*8 dot matrix, connect all the anodes in rows and connect all the cathodes in columns. This will generate the same results, but it will have less Input, output pins.

5*7 dot matrix

There are 5 rows and 7 columns in a 5*7 LED matrix. These are connected together to generate images and videos.

The Viewable Area

To ensure that you take advantage of a LED screen to its full potential, you need to find the right place for it. Placement is the key when it comes to determining the right display for your cause. Size of the LED screen maters, but placement is more important. Bigger isn’t always better. You need to know the right place to find the right size of an LED screen.

We are going to shed some light on how to place your screen correctly and get the best out of it.

The right Angle

                                                led walls

If you are planning to hang your LED display, you need to figure out three main viewing angles. The first is the angle at which you plan to hang your screen. It is an important angle as it will affect the other two angles as well. The second, one is the angle at which the users will be able to see your display i.e. the angle at which your users head will be at while he/she is coming towards your display.

Last, we have the correction angle. This is not a common angle and many do not use it. It basically compensates for any obstacle that might come between the user and the digital signage. There are no hard and fast rules, but small things help you find the right viewable area. For instance, a person with 20/20 eyesight can clearly see a sign from about 7-8 meters of distance. They are able to read a slightly taller text easily. Since it takes a shopper to reach your shop about 5-7 seconds, you have to make the text readable in that time.

The amount of Time Changes

When you put your sign about 20 feet and directly in front of you at your eye level, you will be able to see the sign by the time our approach. This holds true if you have perfect eyesight. A litter up or below the perfect angle will make it difficult for the audience to see, however, it is not possible to adjust the LED screen according to individual customers.

Thus, the best way to go about this is to pick a representative angle and height, and hope that this will work for the majority of your audience. Usually, this trick does work and you are able to get good results via your LED display screen.

Focus on other aspects besides the Size

Sometimes spending hours on reading informative material, you still are not able to fully comprehend the best way to choose the perfect screen. Summary

LED digital Display essentials are important features in order to find the right LED display. Only the right LED display will be able to generate the best and promising results. Features like the pixel pitch, the matrix, and the viewable area have a direct impact on how the audience will respond to your LED display.

Pixel pitch helps to determine the quality of the LED. Smaller pixel pitch means better and crisp images. However, smaller is not always better. If the optimal viewable distance of an LED screen is greater, it means you can use a larger pixel pitch size. However, in the case of smaller distance, we recommend a smaller pixel pitch. Likewise, the matrix and the viewable area affect the size and the quality of the screen. Choosing the right placement for your LED screen is as important as selecting the right size. If you have a big LED screen and you place it in a small conference room, over the heads of the people, the LED sign is not going to make any impact.

Thus, while you choose an LED display, make sure that it is appropriate for the place you plan to install it in. So, pay close heed to all these features and make the right choice the first time because LED screens are not something that comes easily. They are expensive, but they promise outstanding results.
